French wine fun facts

Growers had cultivated vines in the Champagne region for centuries but it was not until 1668 that Dom Perignon, a Benedictine monk, experimented with the second fermentation in the bottle to create the bubbles we all know and love today.

The Romans grew vines in Burgundy as early as the 1st Century AD.

Le Chambertin (Grand cru of Gevrey Chambertin) was Napoleon’s favourite wine.  He drank it on the battlefield, and during the Retreat from Moscow in 1811.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s fortunes improved after the 12th century. For a short while, the Popes lived in Avignon, and the region prospered. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is made of 13 white and red grape varieties.”
